A monastery in Bhutan required natural black slate for its outdoor pathways and gathering areas. The material needed to withstand monsoon conditions, heavy pedestrian traffic, and long-term weather exposure while preserving the natural appearance and texture of the stone.
Although the project specification appeared straightforward, achieving the required combination of slip resistance, durability, dimensional accuracy, and visual consistency required a customized manufacturing approach.
Petros Stone LLP developed a project-specific processing solution covering material selection, surface finishing, fabrication, reinforcement, and export logistics from India to Bhutan.
The Challenge
For a culturally significant project such as this monastery, the stone needed to satisfy several technical requirements simultaneously:
- 100% natural black slate
- Slip-resistant finish suitable for exterior walkways
- Resistance to weathering in Bhutan’s monsoon and high-altitude climate
- Uniform appearance across the installation
- Long-term durability with minimal maintenance
Natural slate contains inherent variations in texture and layered structure. While increasing surface roughness improves slip resistance, excessive processing can increase the likelihood of foliation, edge chipping, and surface cracking if not carefully controlled.
The objective was therefore to improve functional performance without compromising the natural character of the material.
Engineering the Solution
1. Customized Anti-Skid Surface Processing
Rather than relying on a standard production process, Petros Stone developed a customized anti-skid finish through multiple rounds of sample development and production trials.
Working closely with the project designers, the engineering team evaluated several surface finishes, adjusting machine parameters, brush configurations, and processing speeds until the required level of grip and visual consistency was achieved.
A key part of the process was the use of abrasive brushes imported from Italy and manufactured to Petros Stone’s specifications. The tooling was selected to match the density and grain characteristics of the slate, allowing greater control over the finished surface while preserving the stone’s natural texture.
2. Precision Water Jet Fabrication
The project incorporated both square and circular paving elements.
Water jet cutting technology enabled accurate fabrication with clean edges, tight dimensional tolerances, and minimal edge damage, ensuring consistency during installation while reducing material wastage.
3. Resin Impregnation for Structural Stability
To improve long-term durability, the slate underwent resin impregnation before dispatch.
A specially selected resin penetrated the stone’s natural foliation planes and was cured under controlled conditions, helping strengthen the internal structure, reduce moisture ingress, and minimize the likelihood of cracking or flaking during long-term outdoor exposure.
The treatment reinforced the stone without altering its natural appearance or surface texture.
Logistics
Manufacturing the material was only part of the project.
The finished stone then had to travel approximately 4,000 kilometers from India to the monastery site in Bhutan, including transportation through mountainous terrain.
Careful packaging, route planning, and shipment coordination helped ensure that every crate arrived safely and was installed without damage.
The project also reflected Petros Stone’s experience in managing international stone shipments across more than 50 countries.
The Outcome
The completed installation delivered a natural black slate surface that satisfied the project’s functional and aesthetic objectives. The finished pathways combined reliable slip resistance, visual consistency, and long-term durability while retaining the authentic character of natural slate.
More importantly, the project demonstrated how customized stone processing can help natural stone meet specialized architectural requirements without sacrificing its natural appeal.
