The Belgian was expected to make a comeback within the last few weeks of the season. He has been out of action since August due to a ruptured cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Madrid released a statement saying, “Our player Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a ruptured internal meniscus in his right knee following tests carried out today.”

In addition to ruling out playing for Belgium in the summer’s European Championship, Courtois is now unlikely to feature for Madrid for the remainder of the current season.

In recent months, Andriy Lunin, a Ukrainian goalkeeper on loan from Chelsea, has gained the confidence of Madrid’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, surpassing Kepa Arrizabalaga.

In the tournament this season, La Liga leaders Real Madrid take on Champions League champions Manchester City in the quarterfinals.
